Thee Single Spy ‘OK Corral’ Release Date: 9th August 2010 / Preorder available now Label: Robot Elephant Records Cat No: RER02 Format: 7” Vinyl / Digital Release “Brilliantly well-crafted indie pop.” Jon Hilcock – NME Radio
Try to fathom a band who seamlessly fuse image-laden lyrics, reminiscent of Neutral Milk Hotel and Bill Callahan, over a rich plethora of instrumentation, including French horns, organs, pianettes and clarinets. To author a sound that is both lo-fi hi-fi indie honest and organic. This is Thee Single Spy.
Formed in 2007 as a solo acoustic venture for front man Alex Mattinson, early comparisons lay with Bright Eyes, Lambchop and Nick Cave. As they stand in 2010, Thee Single Spy comprises of Benjamin Brunel (Accordion/Clarinet/Vocals) James Ingham (Bass) Pete Clarke (Piano/Organ/Guitar) and Michael Alloway (Drums/Vocals).
‘OK Corral’ - a lament to a past love and the feeling of being trapped by past mistakes - is the first single to be released on flourishing independent label Robot Elephant Records and the first track to be taken from their recently completed debut album, titled “Shipwrecking”, co-produced Luke Joyce (British Sea Power/The Macabees/Laura Marling). Recorded over a nine-day period and accompanied by the solitude of Brighton’s coast, Thee Single Spy interspersed 12 hour days with the consumption of brandy, snowball fights and constructing igloos, to the soulful sounds of Billie Holiday.
Live, the band are poised for a series of dates over the summer period, and with recent support slots for the likes of Emmy The Great, Chimes and Bells (Bella Union) and Goldheart Assembly, expect to see Thee Single Spy on a profusion of festival bills for 2011.
